Q&A with Dr. Nausheen Abbas

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your medical background?

I was born, raised, and educated in New Jersey. I received my summa cum laude BA in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from Rutgers University and my MD from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. I completed my Ophthalmology Residency at Yale University, followed by a Cornea/External Eye Disease Fellowship at Albany University. I moved to Wisconsin in 2015 and currently reside here with my husband and three children.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in ophthalmology?

I chose a career in ophthalmology for many reasons. I love the mix of medicine and surgery, which gives me the ability to fix a problem while maintaining continuity of care and forming lifelong relationships. I also enjoy diagnosing and treating most problems without needing many ancillary tests. Most importantly, being able to restore sight is incredibly rewarding.

Can you tell us a fun detail about your time in medical school?

Good question! During one of our multicultural shows, I participated in a Tinikling dance routine with my classmates. (It’s a Filipino dance with bamboo sticks.)

What is the function of the cornea?

The cornea focuses light onto the retina and protects the inner structures of the eye.

Why would someone see a cornea specialist?

People may seek a cornea specialist for various reasons, including routine eye care, help with dry eye, and diagnosis and management of specific corneal conditions such as keratoconus and Fuch’s dystrophy.

What does a cornea specialist treat?

A cornea specialist treats most corneal disorders and provides routine eye care.

How can you tell if you have a scratched cornea?

Corneal abrasions can cause significant pain, redness, light sensitivity, a foreign body sensation, and tearing. We can detect a scratched cornea during an exam using blue light.

How do you treat a scratched cornea?

Treatment options include antibiotic drops or ointments, lubrication, patching, and bandage contact lenses.

What is a cornea transplant?

There are several types of corneal transplants, but the two most common are full-thickness and partial-thickness transplants. These involve replacing either the entire cornea or part of it with a donor cornea.
